Council becomes signatory to Refugee Welcome Scroll

09/06/2017

Georges River Council is proud to announce that it has become a signatory to the Refugee Welcome Zone, which will see Council’s name, logo and signature of the Administrator, John Rayner, added to the Refugee Welcome Scroll.

The Welcome Scroll initiative confirms Council’s commitment to welcoming refugees into the local community and enhancing cultural diversity.

Refugee Week is an opportunity to encourage support between communities, which is paramount in helping young refugees forge new lives in the Georges River area.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is ‘With courage let us all combine’.

Council will be joining local organisations, schools and community groups to celebrate Refugee Week 2017 and mark the triumphs of refugees and the contribution they have made to the local community at a free event at the Civic Theatre, Hurstville on Thursday 15 June.

Having partnered with a number of agencies for the celebration, Council has created a program which will feature young refugee guest speakers, musical performances and a short film screening focusing on refugee stories.

This year also sees the launch of the Refugee Film Festival, and films will highlight the kinds of difficulties faced by people who have fled conflict for a safer future.

Winners of Council’s Refugee Creative Writing Competition will also be announced and strongly encourage the community to come along to help make it a great day.
