Georges River Art Prize

We are excited to announce that a new Georges River Art Prize is launching in 2017. The art prize has been developed on the success and foundations of the Kogarah Art Prize and St George Art Awards. This biennial prize is hosted by Hurstville Museum & Gallery and Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre.

Georges River Art Prize 2017 - Important dates

Entries open 3 July 2017
Entries close 15 September 2017
Exhibition dates 4 November – 13 December 2017
Georges River Art Prize - Official opening  Friday 10 November 2017, 6.00pm for 6.30pm. RSVP online.
Youth awards presentation ceremony Saturday 4 November 2017, 2.00pm. RSVP online.


Prize categories

Category Prize Criteria
Georges River Art Prize (painting prize) $10,000 acquisitive Open to all Australian permanent residents and citizens for paintings.
Artists must be 18 years or over on the date of entry.
Georges River Sculpture Prize  $5,000 Open to all Australian permanent residents and citizens for sculptural work.
Artists must be 18 years or over on the date of entry.
Georges River Local Artist Prize $4,000 acquisitive & a solo exhibition (in-kind value approximately $200) Entrants who enter the Georges River Art Prize (painting prize) and live in the Georges River Council Local Government Area will be considered for this prize.
Georges River Little Artist Prize $200 materials voucher (7 - 12 years of age)
Entrants must live or study in the Georges River Council Local Government Area.
Georges River Youth Prize $300 materials voucher (13 - 17 years of age)
Entrants must live or study in the Georges River Council Local Government Area.
Georges River People’s Choice Prize $500 Entrants in the Georges River Art Prize and Georges River Sculpture Prize are also eligible to win the Georges River People's Choice Prize.
Georges River Favourite Young Artist Prize $100 Entrants in the Georges River Little Artist Prize and Georges River Youth Prize are also eligible to win the Georges River Favourite Young Artist Prize.

Kon Gouriotis OAM

Kon Gouriotis OAM has held various Australian visual arts leadership roles including Director of the Australia Council for the Arts Visual Arts Board, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, and Australian Centre for Photography.  
He is currently the Editor of Artist Profile and an independent visual arts curator. Presently the exhibition Artist Profile: Australasian Painters 2007 – 2017 at the Orange Regional Gallery, which he curated with Lucy Stranger, includes 143 Australasian painters. 

In August 2017 he was awarded the Local Government of NSW inaugural Leo Kelly OAM Arts and Culture Award, along with co-curator Paul Howard, for It’s Our Thing – More History on Australian Hip-Hop Project Part I, a 2016 exhibition at the Blacktown Arts Centre.
Greg Hansell F.R.A.S.

Greg Hansell graduated from St George Technical College in Kogarah, majoring in painting and drawing.  He commenced work as a professional artist and moved to the Hawkesbury district, where he lives on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. 

Greg has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize and a finalist in the Wynne Prize eighteen times.  In 2014, he was awarded a Highly Commended at the Maritime Art Award at the Mission to Seafarers in Melbourne. He has also won the Mosman Art Prize twice. 

Greg Hansell is a Fellow, Councillor and Art School Director at the Royal Art Society of NSW at Lavender Bay and teaches plein air classes regularly at various sites around Sydney Harbour.
Monica McMahon

Monica McMahon has been the Western Sydney University Art Curator since 2002 and during this period she has established four galleries on its campuses. She is the exhibition program manager for all of the following Western Sydney University galleries; Australia-China Institute for Arts And Culture Gallery (Parramatta Campus), Margaret Whitlam Galleries (Parramatta Campus), Margot Hardy Gallery (Bankstown Campus) and the Western Sydney University Art Gallery (Werrington North, Penrith Campus) which are recognized public galleries. 

Monica is the artistic director of the Western Sydney University Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Exhibition (a biennial outdoor exhibition held on the University's Campbelltown Campus), which was established in 2004. She is also the curator of the University's permanent art collection, and responsible for the promotion, development, research and management of the collection which is distributed throughout the University's six campuses across Western Sydney.
